Canada Women’s National Volleyball Team at World Championship

FIVB volleyball women’s world championship is the sport event that has a long history. The first world championship took place in the Soviet Union in 1952 and the last world championship took place in Japan in 2018.

It’s worth noting that the Canada women’s national volleyball team participated in the world championship in Mexico in 1974 for the first time in the history. The team also participated in the world championships that were held in the Soviet Union in 1978, in Peru in 1982, in Czechoslovakia in 1986, in China in 1990, in Germany in 2002, in Japan in 2010, in Italy in 2014 and in Japan in 2018. Totally, the Canada women’s national volleyball team has participated in the world championships 9 times.

Today, we’ll dig deeper into the history of women’s volleyball in Canada. We’ll briefly explain to you how the Canada women’s national volleyball team played on each of world championships. Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 1974

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 3 games and lost 8 games during the world championship 1974. As a result, the team reached the quarter finals and took the 11th place. Canada played in Pool F (the 1-st round) together with South Korea, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia and in Pool I (the 2-nd round) together with Romania, the Soviet Union and Poland during the world championship 1974.

Canada won Czechoslovakia 3 – 1 (Set 1: 9 – 15, Set 2: 15 – 10, Set 3: 15 – 12 and Set 4: 16 – 14), Canada won Bulgaria 3 – 2 (Set 1: 2 – 15, Set 2: 5 -15, Set 3: 16 – 14, Set 4: 15 – 9 and Set 5: 15 – 19) and Canada lost to South Korea 0 – 3 (Set 1: 13 – 15, Set 2: 7 – 15 and Set 3: 10 – 15) in the round 1 of the world championship 1974. Canada lost to the Soviet Union 2 – 3 (Set 1: 15 – 11, Set 2: 1 – 15, Set 3: 15 – 13, Set 4: 7 – 15 and Set 5: 3 – 15), Canada lost to Poland 0 – 3 (Set 1: 9 – 15, Set 2: 2 – 15 and Set 3: 8 – 15), Canada lost to Romania 0 – 3 (Set 1: 9 – 15, Set 2: 11– 15 and Set 3: 9 – 15) in the round 2 of the world championship 1974.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 1978

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 5 games and lost 4 games during the world championship 1978. The team played in the round 1 only and took 14th place. Canada played in Pool C together with South Korea, Brazil and West Germany during the world championship 1978.

Canada lost to South Korea 0 – 3 (Set 1: 10 – 15, Set 2: 2 – 15 and Set 3: 10 – 15), Canada lost to Brazil 1 – 3 (Set 1: 15 – 3, Set 2: 6 – 15, Set 3: 11 – 15 and Set 4: 12 – 15) and Canada won West Germany 3 – 0 (Set 1: 15 – 1, Set 2: 15 – 11 and Set 3: 15 – 0) in the round 1 of the world championship 1978.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 1982

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 3 games and lost 6 games during the world championship 1982. As a result, the team reached the quarter finals and took the 11th place. Canada played in Pool A (the preliminary round) together with Peru, Indonesia and Nigeria and in Pool A (the quarter finals) together with Japan, Peru, South Korea, Brazil and Bulgaria.

Canada won Nigeria 3 – 0 (Set 1: 15 – 3, Set 2: 15 – 0 and Set 3: 15 – 4), Canada won Indonesia 3 – 0 (Set 1: 15 – 2, Set 2: 15 – 7 and Set 3: 15 – 5) and Canada lost to Peru 0 – 3 (Set 1: 1 – 15, Set 2: 11 – 15 and Set 3: 4 – 15) in the preliminary round of the world championship 1982.

Canada lost to South Korea 0 – 3 (Set 1: 8 – 15, Set 2: 2 – 15 and Set 3: 4 – 15), Canada lost to Japan 0 – 3 (Set 1: 5 – 15, Set 2: 9 – 15 and Set 3: 9 – 15), Canada lost to Bulgaria 2 – 3 (Set 1: 15 – 10, Set 2: 15 – 10, Set 3: 12 – 15, Set 4: 5 – 15 and Set 5: 10 – 15) and Canada lost to Brazil 1 – 3 (Set 1: 10 – 15, Set 2: 12 – 15, Set 3: 15 – 7 and Set 4: 2 – 15) in the quarter finals of the world championship 1982.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 1986

The Canada women’s national volleyball team lost 3 games during the world championship 1982. The team finished the tournament in the round 1 and took the 15th place. Canada played in group A together with Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and South Korea during the world championship 1986. Canada lost all 3 games in the round 1 of the world championship 1986.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 1990

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 2 games and lost 4 games during the world championship 1990. The team finished the championship in the round 1 and took the 14th place. Canada played in group C together with the Netherlands, the Soviet Union and Peru. The team lost all 3 games during the world championship 1990.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2002

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 1 game and lost 4 games during the world championship 2002. The team finished the championship in the round 1 and took the 18th place. Canada played in pool B together with South Korea, Cuba, the Netherlands, Romania and Egypt during the world championship 2002.

Canada won Egypt 0 – 3 (Set 1: 25 – 9, Set 2: 25 – 23 and Set 3: 25 – 12), Canada lost to Cuba 2 – 3 (Set 1: 25 – 22, Set 2: 22 – 25, Set 3: 25 – 21, Set 4: 14 – 25 and Set 5: 10 – 15), Canada lost to South Korea 0 – 3 (Set 1: 11 – 25, Set 2: 19 – 25 and Set 3: 15 – 25), Canada lost to Romania 0 – 3 (Set 1: 21 – 25, Set 2: 18 – 25 and Set 3: 22 – 25) and Canada lost to the Netherlands 0 – 3 (Set 1: 18 – 25, Set 2: 21 – 25 and Set 3: 23 – 25) in the round 1 of the world championship 2002.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2010

The Canada women’s national volleyball team lost 5 games during the world championship 2010. The team finished the championship in the round 1 and took the 21th place. Canada played in pool D together with Russia, South Korea, Turkey, China and Dominican Republic during the world championship 2010.

Canada lost to South Korea 0 – 3 (Set 1: 19 – 25, Set 2: 19 – 25 and Set 3: 14 – 25), Canada lost to China 0 – 3 (Set 1: 16 – 25, Set 2: 19 – 25 and Set 3: 10 – 25), Canada lost to Russia 0 – 3 (Set 1: 13 – 25, Set 2: 16 – 25 and Set 3: 21 – 25), Canada lost to Turkey 2 – 3 (Set 1: 25 – 19, Set 2: 25 – 20, Set 3: 14 – 25, Set 4: 17 – 25 and Set 5: 8 – 15) and Canada lost to Dominican Republic 1 – 3 (Set 1: 25 – 21, Set 2: 26 – 28, Set 3: 11 – 25 and Set 4: 20 – 25) in the round 1 of the world championship 2010.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2014

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 1 game and lost 4 games during the world championship 2014. The team finished the championship in the round 1 and took the 17th place. Canada played in pool B together with Brazil, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Cameroon during the world championship 2014.

Canada won Cameroon 3 – 1 (Set 1: 25 – 12, Set 2: 25 – 15, Set 3: 20 – 25 and Set 4: 25 – 14), Canada lost to Turkey 0 – 3 (Set 1: 10 – 25, Set 2: 12 – 25 and Set 3: 17 – 25), Canada lost to Brazil 0 – 3 (Set 1: 14 – 25, Set 2: 8 – 25 and Set 3: 18 – 25), Canada lost to Serbia 1 – 3 (Set 1: 7 – 25, Set 2: 28 – 26, Set 3: 21 – 25 and Set 4: 15 – 25) and Canada lost to Bulgaria 0 – 3 (Set 1: 17 – 25, Set 2: 16 – 25 and Set 3: 18 – 25) in round 1 of the world championship 2014.

Canada at Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2018

The Canada women’s national volleyball team won 1 game and lost 4 games during the world championship 2018. The team finished the championship in the round 1 and took the 18th place. Canada played in pool B together with China, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria and Cuba during the world championship 2018.

Canada lost to Turkey 0 – 3 (Set 1: 18 – 25, Set 2: 13 – 25 and Set 3: 15 – 25), Canada lost to Italy 0 – 3 (Set 1: 15 – 25, Set 2: 15 – 25 and Set 3: 18 – 25), Canada lost to China 0 – 3 (Set 1: 21 – 25, Set 2: 21 – 25 and Set 3: 13 – 25), Canada won Cuba 3 – 1 (Set 1: 16 – 25, Set 2: 25 – 13, Set 3: 25 – 18 and Set 4: 25 – 20) and Canada lost to Bulgaria 1 – 3 (Set 1: 25 – 23, Set 2: 25 – 27, Set 3: 21 – 25 and Set 4: 21 – 25) in the round 1 of the world championship 2018.
